[applause] in exchange, they have said they will keep the applause down. they're able to give their message to you. we have a panel of questioners from around ohio tonight. each candidate will have 90 seconds to respond to a question from our panelists followed by one-and responses from the appointed and then a 30-second rebuttal. mandel won a coin toss early this week and he decided to give his remarks last. >> thank you, nbc.
for small businesses and job creators and middle-class families. compare that to washington and shared brown, in washington he has raised taxes 36 times. 36 times during his 20 years in washington. he did not pay his taxes once, he did not pay his taxes three times. he is raising your taxes and is not paying his own. when he was asked why he did not pay his taxes, his answer was that he forgot. maybe the understand that once or twice but three times, you forgot to pay your taxes? you are on the banking committee that deals with mortgages. if you are not paying your own taxes. the reason congress has a 10% approval rating, is because they think they can live by one set of rules. it is so proud to stand up for lower taxes. i helped pass the first property tax rollback in the history of the county. >> this is simply not true, again, but i have come to expect that. he did not answer the question about grover norquist. it is not just talking about middle-class taxes. he has a fast against raising taxes on hedge fund operators, who pays more than mitt romney -- coupes -- who paid significantly low
folks you may know. chairman reince priebus, and the former cleveland browns great gary baxter is here. we appreciate his support in the campaign. i have been heartened by the support that our campaign is receiving across the nation. the attention that is being focused on this race is because people recognize how much is at stake. it is critical time for the country. we face or rumors -- we face enormous challenges, an economy that is not putting people to work. the people coming out of college cannot find work -- half of them cannot find work. around the world we face at china which is going to be a major economic power. already is and will be a stronger power down the road. has been taking a lot of jobs from people here in ohio. the also face radical violent jihadists. i am proud of the fact that our team has focused on what we will do to bring real change, big change to a country that badly needs it. we have a precedent today -- president today who has a different view. his view is we are on the right track, no need for major change. my view is this track is the wrong force for amer
believe in him as a leader and as a good person and a family man. senator brown and i are debating a variety of issues. one of the main issue was whether or not the free enterprise system works. i believe when someone decides they're going to go to a community bank for a loan to start a hardware store or go to family for investment or maybe still some property to start a restaurant and they take that business from two employees to 20, 200, we should celebrate that in america. we should advance that. we should reward that success. of the worldama's are trying to demonize that success. we cannot be pro-jobs and anti- job creators. we cannot go on the front of the new york times and vilify those men and women who are signing for loans to create those jobs. that is the fundamental question he and i are having. for me, i believe in the free enterprise system. he and i are also having a public policy debate about the importance of fiscal conservatism. or right now, the lack thereof. senator portman mentioned what we have done. signing for loans to create those jobs. that is the fundament
the state. just ask scott brown. we will now go to oregon, on our line for republicans, ilene. from one of those non-swing states. good morning. caller: good morning. i thank you for c-span and all that you do for the election is wonderful. i am a republican but i did vote for gary johnson. i watched the debate on your channel. and i had not voted, and we vote by mail here -- had i not devoted and we vote by mail, i probably would have voted for obama. i think he did a stellar job. with the correct name. i think you for your programming. host: are there issues you wish the candidates would address more but you think they are not because oregon is not considered a battleground state? caller: jobs of course. we are one of the poorest states. i volunteer at a food bank. i cannot believe how fast we have grown up. because of lack of employment. and it is sad, it is very, very sad. >> thank you for the call. we want to show you a clip of the governor romney yesterday in virginia. one of those swing states. yesterday he campaigned with majority leader eric cantor, a congressman from virginia.
to be the fema director when you were in florida after mike brown. is that true, and to you write your own -- do you write your own tweets? >> yes, that is why there is this piping's. -- that is why there are misspellings in there. as far as the rest of this that goes, i work for the present right now, and that is my focus. -- i work for the president right now, and that is my focus. what happened previously, we can talk about that later offline. >> thank you. >> next question. wall street journal, your line is open. >> i wanted to ask whether there is a consolidated effort on how many people are being told to evacuate or have evaporated, and -- evaluated -- that have evaluated, and -- evacuated, and a number of states that would involve. the second question on the coastal storm surges. if you could share more perspective on how long this could last, and a bit of time we have those kinds of a large swath of coast line? >> i do not have that in front of me. each state has been doing their own evacuations. we have been looking at what they would need to support that. we will have public affairs g
obama needs to throw colorado, but also the about brown states. it is to get the same coalitions, the youth, the women, both on a phillippe -- unaffiliated and republican, minority provisions need to turn out in historic week disproportionate numbers. denver has a very young population, which is also a democrat stronghold. i have seen that had three or four times in the last couple of nights spirit -- i've seen advertisements three or four times in the last couple of nights. host: are you seeing what lawyers are doing to prepare for that? guest: modern campaigning since 2000 with the florida recount, it seems that one of its first things you do is hire gorda attorneys, between good election law and getting ready for the challenge. on the republican side i'm confident. the democrats have a well oiled machine, not only nationally. but on the republican side they are very well-organized. their two legal strike teams in a lot of the counties, not all 64, but the key ones. they will have teams of lawyers on the ground actually watching the palace -- the ballots be processed. it is all
